Thank you, Mr. President.
After reading this turgid report, I wondered whether we had time traveled back to a university lecture from the 1970s. The report directs its ire towards the United States for supposedly being the sole actor responsible for jeopardizing a mythical utopia of global multipolarity.
At the same time in the report, Iran, which is responsible for mayhem and destruction across the Middle East; Communist Cuba which immiserates its population, and authoritarian BRICS countries, are portrayed as innocent victims of or praised for opposing the big, bad United States.
The report laments the US sanctioning of the Palestinian Rapporteur, invoking a shield of immunity, while ignoring her blatant violations of the UN Code of Conduct, including gross selectivity, partiality, non-objectivity, and discrimination. That China is of course held up as a model in this multipolar fantasy world is not surprising given the country donated $100,000 to the Rapporteur’s mandate.
What appears to be most upsetting for the mandate holder, however, and reflected in the report, is that the US wants to protect its national interests, like all countries, and is demanding accountability from those benefiting from its largesse. It is no longer willing to finance international agencies and programs that are duplicative, discriminatory, destructive, and without demonstrated results. It will no longer pay to promote impunity. This report is a prime example of why this US policy was adopted.
