32nd Meeting 58th Session of Human Rights Council UN Web TV
– General debate on agenda item 3 (Cont’d)
International Probono Legal Services Association Limited, Mr. Junius Ho
发言内容:
In the aftermath of 2019 Hong Kong protests, the UK government introduced the BNO visa scheme. Over 100,000 Hong Kong residents have applied, with many emigrating to the UK.
However, the challenges faced by BNO immigrants are increasingly concerning. Despite their qualifications, many find themselves in no skilled roles and encounter significant barriers to professional and personal success. This situation seems to conflict with the UK’s obligations under the ICCPR and ICESCR.
Moreover, there is compelling evidence suggests that the UK is leveraging its colonial ties with Hong Kong to attract vulnerable individuals, primarily to address labor shortages and financial deficits exacerbated by Brexit.
This exploitation is particularly apparent when compared to the approach of countries such as Australia and Canada, which have provided notably better support for Hong Kong immigrants without being required to do so.
The difficulties faced by BNO immigrants reflect a broader UK strategy that appears to prioritize economic gain over the well-being of those it welcomes.
It is imperative that the UK government be held accountable for ensuring that Hong Kong immigrants can fully realize their rights, including increasing funding and resources to provide academic support and opportunities for integration.
I think you.
