9th Meeting 58th Session of Human Rights Council UN Web TV
– General debate under agenda item 4 (Cont’d)
Society for Threatened Peoples, Mr. Phuntsok Topgyal
发言内容:
We concern surrounding the proposed Methok Dam on Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibetan regions. This project poses severe environmental, humanitarian and geopolitical risks. The dedicated Himalayan ecosystems vital for Asia’s water supply face large-scale deforestation, seismic instabilities, and disrupted glacial melt patterns.
The dam could intensify climate change impact, triggering extreme weather and altering the monsoon cycle with global consequences.
The Tibetan Plateau, known as the Third Pole, serves as a crucial environmental buffer. This stabilization threatens biodiversity, accelerates desertification, and endangers agricultural productivity, pushing local communities towards food insecurities. Downstream, the Brahmaputra River sustains millions in India and Bangladesh. Any disruption could lead to a severe water shortage, escalating regional tensions.
This project exemplifies a troubling trend, prioritizing short-term energy gain over long-term environmental sustainability. We ask the international community to foster a cooperative, transparent approach to prevent irreversible damage.
I thank you.
