Mr. Vice-President,
I have the honor to speak on behalf of the group of friends in defense of the charter of the United Nations.
We are deeply concerned at the high volatility in global food prices which challenges the right to food. Guaranteeing food security requires the elimination of all market distortion measures.
Therefore, we strongly call for the immediate elimination of unilateral coercive measures(UCMs), which are against the UN Charter and the international law.
Our group appreciates the fact that the group by the Special Rapporteur following his visit to Venezuela made ample mention of the highly negative impact of criminal UCMs on the right to food.
We highlight the tireless efforts made by the Venezuelan government to guarantee access to food for its people despite the application of more than 1000 UCMs.
We reaffirm our strong support to the resolution on the right to food which will be presented to this session.
Finally, we call upon states to actively engaged in the promotion and protection of the realization of the right to food in all countries.
