Mr president,
I thank Redress Trust for the opportunity to address the council.
I’m here today to raise with Working Group and the Council the use of arbitrary detention by the Hong Kong authorities in an attempt to silence those who call for democracy, and the protection of rights and freedoms in Hong Kong SAR.
My name is Tatyana Eatwell, I am member of the international legal team for Mr. Jimmy Lai, 76 year old British Pro-democracy campaigner , media owner and prisoner of conscience in Hong Kong.
Mr Lai has now been detained in solitary confinement for over 3.5 years since December 2020 in circumstances that pose grave risks to his health, and violation of China’s obligations under the Convention Against Torture.
Mr Lai’s case is emblematic of the systematic assault freedom of expression and the rule of law in Hong Kong, and the use of unlawful arbitrary detention to target journalists,publishers and Pro- democracy campaigners.
He’s now on trial and faces life imprisonment under the draconian National Security Law, as prosecution’s case has made clear, his fearless journalism at Apple Daily, his discussion of politics and accountability in Hong Kong, and his campaign for democracy in Hong Kong,for exercising his internationally protected rights and freedoms.
We call on China and the Hong Kong authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Mr Lai, and we urge the Working Group and the Council to raise Mr Lai ‘s case along with the cases of all those who are being unlawfully and arbitrarily detained in Hong Kong, for exercising their internationally protected rights and freedoms, and to call for their immediate and unconditional release.
