Thank you.I represent Uyghur American Association and Anti- slavery International, which are steering committee members of the Coalition to End Forced Labor in the Uyghur region.
Our coalition thanks the Special Rapporteur for rightly noting that state imposed forced labor has been reported in China. Our submission to the Special Rapporteur highlighted evidence of state imposed forced labor of Uyghurs, and other Turkic Muslim majority peoples in prisons and internment camps since 2017.
The forced labor systems are means of control and assimilation and must be understood as likely constituting crimes against humanity, including enslavement as laid out in the Rome Statute.
Both the OHCHR and the Special Rapporteur on slavery found in 2022 that crimes against humanity may be taking place in the Uyghur region.
We call for action from the council and the OHCHR.In particular, OHCHR should report on the implementation of recommendations to the Chinese government in it’s 2022 assessment report.
Human Rights Council members should adopt a resolution on the human rights situations in China, establishing a body with powers to investigate allegations of crimes against humanity in the Uyghur region.
