Mr president,
We echo High Commissioner’s concerns regarding NGO’s restrictions on civic space in China.The underlying OHCHR’s statement on 27th of August, which highlights glaring gaps in the Chinese government’s implementation of UN recommendations.
Two years since the publication of OHCHR reporting on Xinjiang, these are not abstract violations, they are the lived realities. activists, Sophie Huang and Wang Jian Bing, human rights lawyer Yu Wensheng and his wife Xu Yang,and Uyghur economists Ilham Tohti.
We continue to call on this council to take steps in line with calls made by UN Special Procedures towards holding Chinese authorities accountable.
And we reiterated the urgent need for an investigative mechanism on the situation in Xinjiang.
