Thank you, Mr./Madam (Vice-)President,
Austria aligns with the EU Statement and thanks the High Commissioner for his update.
We firmly reiterate our strong condemnation of Russia’s illegal, unjustified and unprovoked war against Ukraine and call upon Russia to immediately, fully and unconditionally cease its ongoing aggression and withdraw from Ukraine’s entire territory.
Austria continues to be concerned about the human rights situation in China´s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and in Tibet. We are also concerned about the situation in Hongkong and the repressive use of the National Security Law.
We remain deeply alarmed by Myanmar’s humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced and atrocities committed against civilians, including the Rohingya. Violence continues despite the ICJ orders, and both the military and Arakan Army commit grave crimes with impunity. Austria calls for unhindered humanitarian access, accountability, and increased support for the Rohingya.
We are equally concerned by Iran’s escalating repression of journalists and intimidation of their families at home and abroad. Such threats undermine freedom of expression and media freedom. Austria urges Iran to end its harassment, ensure protection, and uphold its international human rights obligations.
We are deeply concerned by the repressive crackdown on civil society organizations, journalists and human rights defenders in El Salvador, and call on the respective authorities to halt all reprisals.
