Respected president,
I speak on behalf of the Beijing Zhicheng Migrant Workers Legal Aid and Research Center.
I call on the United Nations to pay urgent attention to the social security rights of platform workers. The rapid development of the digital economy has given rise to the platform economy with an ever-growing workforce of platform workers.
However, this emerging labor force is facing a widespread lack of social security protection. According to data from the International Labour Organization, there are over 100 million platform workers worldwide, yet more than half of them lack basic social security coverage.
The root cause of this lack of social security lies in the mismatch between this new form of employment and the traditional labor frameworks.
Platform companies often classify workers as independent contractors rather than employees, thereby evading their legal obligations to contribute to social security benefits.
The issue of social security for platform workers is a significant challenge for the global labor market in the era of the digital economy.
We call on the international community to work together, explore innovative solutions and build a fair, inclusive and sustainable platform economy.
Every platform worker deserves the right to decent work and a dignified life.
