The Law Council in Australia is deeply concerned for Dr. Yang Henjun,an Australian citizen who was in February handed a suspended death sentence in China.
Dr .Yang has published hundreds of articles explaining and advocating for individual human rights,democracy and the rule of law. His case was heard in a closed trial in may 2021.However,the precise nature of the espionage charge is faced by Dr. Yang and the evidence on which he was convicted have not been made public.
The Law Council in Australia absolutely and unreservedly opposes the use of the death penalty in all circumstances for all people.It does not accept that weather and in what circumstances the death penalty may lawfully be opposed is a matter that each state is free to determine by itself without reference to international laws and standards.
We continue to hold grave concerns for doctor Yang’s health,which has deteriorated significantly in the 5 years. He has been detained while continuing to maintain his innocence.
We understand and respect.Dr. Yang’s difficult decision to waive his right to appeal on the basis that it would refer the delay is that access to proper medical care.
We urge the People’s Republic of China to ensure that Dr. Yang Henjun reveives adequate and supervised medical care.And that is offered medical parole or otherwise transferred to Australia on a management humanitarian grounds.
