Statement by the Permanent Mission of Brazil to the United Nations Office in the review of China during the 45th session of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review
(Geneva, 23 January 2024)
We praise China for ratifying the 2013 Marrakesh Treaty, following Brazil`s recommendation in 2018.
Brazil commends China for its efforts in the pursuit of development and to erradicate poverty. We commend the country for expanding and improving education for all, its health care system and the provision of adequate housing.
We encourage efforts towards the ratification of the ICCPR.
In a constructive spirit, Brazil recommends that China:
1) accelerate efforts to promote the rights of older persons, addressing discrimination and guaranteeing their rights, to independent lives, social protection and, where needed, appropriate care;
2) stop the application of the death penalty as punishment for non-violent criminal offenses, and to take measures for a moratorium on the application of capital punishment.
Thank you.
