21st Meeting 59th Session of Human Rights Council UN Web TV
Description – Annual panel discussion on the adverse impacts of climate change on Human Rights
SPEAKERS: Anti-Slavery International, Ms. Cara Priestley
发言内容:
Anti-Slavery International welcomes this panel discussion. As the devastating impacts of climate change continue, a full transition away from the fossil fuel economy is imperative. The solar, wind and electric vehicle industries, in particular, are critical to this transition. However, many industries currently carry significant human rights risks from a forced labour perspective. For example, migrant workers are facing severe exploitation in the growing renewable energy sector in the Gulf region, where companies and investors are reliant on an exploitative labour model to deliver their green energy projects.
The solar and electric vehicle industries, and broader critical mineral sourcing, are heavily implicated in forced labour in the Uyghur Region, where the Chinese Government is systematically persecuting Uyghurs and other Turkic and Muslim-majority peoples. A central element of this persecution occurs through state-imposed forced labour. We must ensure the transition to green energy is not reliant on human suffering.
To help achieve this, Governments should: • Introduce mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence legislation, accompanied by import controls on products made in whole or in part, or transported with forced labour, that effectively tackle state-imposed forced labour and incentivise remediation. • Cooperate internationally to support investment in alternative technologies and sources of supply, and meaningfully consult relevant independent trade unions and affected communities. Thank you.
